Head Coach Josh Nilson
Nilson arrives in Ypsilanti following a year-long stint at Penn State, where he started as an assistant coach before assuming co-interim head coach responsibilities in February. While with the Nittany Lions as co-interim head coach, Nilson saw the Nittany Lions jump from 45th in the nation to 31st in the final four competitions of the year, while qualifying two all-around competitors to the NCAA Championships. He was also nominated for Northeast Regional Co-Head Coach of the Year honors.
Additionally, Nilson served as the recruiting coordinator for Penn State, while also working to schedule future competitions. He was the team's primary coach on both uneven bars and vault, in addition to being the main spotter on all four events.
Prior to Penn State, Nilson worked as the primary assistant coach at Utah State University from 2013-16. There, he helped the program reach NCAA Regionals for three consecutive years after failing to qualify for the previous seven seasons. The team also had the highest vault average in program history, in addition to having the second highest bars average. In total, five of the top-10 vault scores in Utah State's history came in 2014.
Assistant Coach, Shea Anderson
Now in her third season as volunteer coach, Shea Anderson is continuing to build upon the 2016 season. In her second season, Anderson played a vital role in the Eagles' fantastic 2016 season. Not only did the Eagles win their second-ever MAC title, but they also qualified to NCAA Regionals for the first time in program history. Additionally, the Green and White repeatedly broke records throughout the season, including a score of 196.6 as a team.
In her first year, Anderson helped guide the Eagles to an impressive record of 13-5. Additionally, the team managed to post a program-high team score of 195.575, besting the previous record set in 2004. Anderson primarily assists on beam and vault, which were two of the Eagles’ most consistent events last season.
Shea Anderson joined the EMU gymnastics coaching staff, Aug. 26, 2014 and has served as a volunteer assistant coach. Anderson, a former gymnast at Iowa State University, will help coach the Eagles after spending two seasons as a graduate assistant strength coach at Creighton University.
While earning her master's degree in exercise science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Anderson was a graduate assistant strength coach at Creighton, where she oversaw women's rowing and cross country while also assisting with women's soccer, volleyball, softball as well as men's and women's basketball.
She got her start in strength and conditioning as an intern at South Dakota State University in 2012, following her graduation from Iowa State with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and health. With the Jackrabbits, she worked with both men's and women's basketball along with football and volleyball.
